Phyllis has been involved in the Health and Wellness industry since 1986, with the foundation of a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, minor in psychology. She achieved certifications from American College of Sports Medicine, Cooper Institute (CIAR), American council on Exercise GX & PT (group exercise, personal training), Pilates Powerhouse Institute, Power Pilates and Physical Mind, Yoga E-RYT 500, Zumba, Silver Sneakers and Barre. In 2022 completed Ayurveda Councilor school with Naryana Ayurveda & Yoga Therapy recognized by the Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA).
Phyllis began her journey with personal training when it wasn't even thought of as a profession. After years of Training and observing client perform exercises with faulty body mechanics, Phyllis was drawn to the Pilates method of conditioning. With an emphasis on posture, stablization and mechanical principals which aligned with her college studies. Her goal was to improve clients function through well defined movement. Movement that has purpose, its both effective and efficient lending to functional longevity.
Phyllis’s experience comes not only from the fitness field, but her professional experience carried over to the medical field. She worked in physical therapy where she taught back school and rehabilitative exercise to patients who were recovering from various orthopedic injury. This prompted her certification/endorsement as Orthopedic Exercise Specialist through ACE. She worked in Cardiac rehab and in a medical office of obstetrics and gynecology and supports women's health. While working for the YMCA she was asked to assist the Cancer rehab program. Then went on to gain CETI certification. Cancer Exercise specialist. Cancer is a life changing experience one that often needs coaching, meditation and yoga. The benefits of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda are vital to healing.
Phyllis utilized her teacher education to teach for Collin County Community College as associate faculty for nine-year. She taught for the American Red Cross, CPR and first aid Then she held a management position as athletic/Fitness director at Stonebriar County club where she, implimented programs, designed conditioning programs for golf, tennis, and general population of the members for seven years.
Phyllis journey in yoga began with a fitness certification from SCW- Fitness in 2003 when her instructor told her to get yoga certified! From then until 2010 she studies with various people. Of significane was Diane Long who was taught through the linage of Indra Devi and Vonda Scaravelli. Both women coming from a background in dance and body mechanics, posturing. In 2010 she expanded her yoga with Purple Lotus achieving RYT-200. After a decade or two of teaching yoga she gained RYT 300. And now E-RYT 500.
Her love for yoga was heightened by her studies in eastern medicine, and influence in native American spiritual culture. She studied the work of various shamanic practitioners, as well as training in Healing Touch and Reiki levels of energy medicine. Eventually this lead to Ayurveda school, a 600 hour program of indepth study of the physiology, pathology of digestion and disease states when ama is presnt in the body. She offers workshops to educate public on how they are unique individual with unique needs. Lifestyle, diet, thoughts effect how one functions in life. You are unique with a specific psyco-social body humor ~ a dosha. It learning how to be in balance.
She loves creating guided meditations in the form of story or imagery to draw clients to a blissful place/ finding their samadhi (bliss). Her meditation are a combination of Christian, Eastern, Western philosophy with spiritual guidance using mantras, mudras, the four directions.
The physical movement, energetic healing and spiritual alignment evolved to a deeper level to heal and coach clients in a specific path. In 2018 she went through a Life Coach training to help others find their dharma (life path/passion).
As a teachers teacher, Phyllis presented at the following events:
Fall of 2016 Dallas Mania convention “Yoga and Chakra”.
Spring of 2018- Dallas Yoga festival- Supported Yoga w/Stability Ball.
February 2020 - Bhakti festival - Yin Yoga, chakra's and meridians.
July 2021 - Holistic Festival of Life - Yin yoga and your Doshas.
"Yoga brought it all together" physical, mental, spiritual, energetic, wisdom, the self. To fulfill her greatest desire, to teach others, with over thirty years of knowledge and experience. Phyllis currently is a YACEP (yoga alliance continuing education provider) for Yin yoga, Biomechanics of Asana, Supported yoga w/ball. The later is a program she created, wrote manual which holds copyright on content. Phyllis has written the manual for Yoga Teacher Training 200/300 RYT. The curriculum is set up by Yoga Alliance - the registry organization for teachers.
As Movement Focus, Phyllis offers group or private yoga, meditation, Ayurveda counciling, healing through spiritual energy and thai yoga bodywork. Sessions are in person as well as through zoom platform. Movement Focus has a private membership group on FB, U-tube channel, and offers classes via zoom.
In September of 2021 she move to Eastern Oklahoma. . .
